Here's the Dominations Wikia page on wars:

Caveat: we win a lot more than we lose, but we are a casual Alliance. Some of the advice below would be entirely wrong for an uber-competitive, top-100 Alliance. If you've stumbled onto this page, the following was written with The Dothraki in mind.
We regularly participate in wars (usually 15v15 or 20v20). Some war guidelines:
- Wars are optional. You can be in the Alliance even if you don't participate in wars. But give them a try, you might like them!
- Wars are for Medieval Age and up. Sorry, but lower ages will just struggle. I reserve the right to make exceptions if I need people to fill out the roster or reduce our strength.
- If you want to participate in wars, check "War" under your Alliance Gate. If you don't do this, I won't be able to add you to the roster.
- If you do not want to participate, please uncheck "War" under your Alliance Gate. This marks you as Unavailable when I'm creating the roster, and keeps me from hurting the team by including someone who doesn't want to be in.
- If you choose to participate, please do both your battles and get as many stars as you can. This means using mercenaries, tactics, generals, coalitions and troop tactics when necessary. If you're not willing to really try, then do not participate in the first place.
- Winning is fun. Losing sucks. Try to win. Your teammates spent time and resources trying to win. It isn't fair to them for you to be a slacker.
