War Tactics

This page has information, tips, and tricks on using War Tactics.

The first thing to know is that "War" tactics are not just for war battles. They're also available in multiplayer battles. The Dominations people could really have picked a better name, but whatever. They are trained at the War Academy building. As you go through the ages, upgrading your War Academy will make additional War Tactics available, and also increase the number of War Tactics you can train at one time. So make sure that building is pretty high on your list of priorities to upgrade.

War Tactics themselves are upgraded in the Armory, so be sure to upgrade the ones you actually use. You don't necessarily have to upgrade War Tactics you don't use, so you can let some of the less useful ones (Barrage, Demolition) fall behind if you like.

I have a lot more to say about War Tactics, but I haven't written it yet. It'll go here when I do, so check back.

Here is a very important tip on using Betrayal against Attack Helicopters: target the shadow, not the troop.

It is pretty common, especially in war battles, for the enemy to stock Town Centers with Attack Helicopters. If you're attacking a base that is Information Age or lower, you can often deal with that by using Blitzkreig (from the Brandenburg Gate wonder) or the Sabotage War Tactic to disable the town center until you can destroy it, preventing the donated troops from ever spawning. But starting with Drone Age opponents, almost everyone uses the drone that prevents the town center from being disabled. So you're probably just going to have to deal with the spawned troops.

You can do that in a number of ways, including air power, etc. But you might decide to use the Betrayal war tactic to turn the enemy's Attack Helicopters against them. That's a good idea, and can be effective. It is a little tricky to get the timing right, as there's generally a lot going on in the battle around the time town center troops are spawning, so it is easy to miss the right moment.

But assuming you time it right, you may notice that the enemy attack helicopters aren't getting betrayed like you think they're supposed to. Instead, some ground troops under the helicopter get betrayed. Or maybe nothing at all. You may even get mad and report this as a bug to customer service. But that's not actually the problem.

The real problem is that the attack helicopters aren't where you think they are. The game draws the SHADOW in the spot that the attack helicopter actually is, and then overlays the troop graphic on top of that. So depending on the size of your device and how far you're zoomed in, the attack helicopter may be as much as a centimeter away from where it appears to be. You can compensate for this by getting used to where the attack helicopter actually is relative to the graphic, and using your Betrayal there, rather than on the helicopter image. Or maybe you're good enough to see the shadow and tap it, but I have trouble doing that with all the ground clutter that's usually around the town center.

To be clear, what you have to do is betray a spot a little distance away from the helicopter, rather than betraying directly on the helicopter image. Weird, I know, but that's how the game works.

War Tactics themselves are upgraded in the Armory, so be sure to upgrade the ones you actually use. You don't necessarily have to upgrade War Tactics you don't use, so you can let some of the less useful ones (Barrage, Demolition) fall behind if you like.
